Whether foster parents or extended family members, there is no consistency in the training provided to caretakers regarding how to address the critical issues of sexual health and relationships. This lack of comprehensive sex education for youth in foster care has a significant correlation with high rates of pregnancy, sexual abuse, and contraction of sexually transmitted diseases, among other adverse outcomes. This guide aims to equip foster parents with all the necessary tools to confidently discuss these issues with their foster children in an easy-to-integrate manner into their daily lives.

Children with disabilities are at higher risk for child sexual abuse than children without disabilities. The risk of abuse is exacerbated and heightened because of unique dynamics related to disability and the support these children receive. There is an alarming lack of primary prevention efforts geared to preventing abuse of children with disabilities. Therefore, Trees of Hope will create a guide geared toward the unique challenges children with special needs face and how parents can safeguard them from victimization.
